Are Memory Foam Mattresses Safe?
The federal standard on mattress flammability (16 CFR Part 1633, Mattress Cover Flammability (Open Flame) Standard; Final Rule) requires memory foam mattresses to be flame retardant. But are memory foam have flame retardant? No! Even though memory foam has added flame retardants, it will still burn at the right temperature.
Is a memory foam mattress good for you?
A quality memory foam bed provides excellent pressure relief. Its body hugging properties provide enhanced lumbar support, making it an ideal mattress for back pain. Memory foam beds may last longer than traditional innerspring mattresses. Most memory foam mattresses come with a 10 to 25 year warranty. Foam mattresses are popular, but with them come concerns about their safety. The safety concerns stem from the fact that some foam mattresses are made with synthetic materials and are fireproofed with chemical flame retardants.
Are Memory Foam Mattresses Safe
According to a rule passed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 2007, all mattresses sold in the U.S. must have a flame retardant layer. The mattress must withstand a 70-second flame test. This measure is intended to reduce mattress fires and increase consumer safety.
Polyurethane foam is flammable. Like all mattresses, even foam mattresses must be treated with chemicals or fire retardant fabrics.
It’s good to know about the chemicals used as flame retardants and how they affect us. Both natural and chemical flame retardants can be used on mattresses.
Some chemicals, while effective mattress flame retardants, can affect your health. Not all flame retardants cause health problems, but many mattress manufacturers in the U.S. have eschewed flame retardants altogether.
Toxic and Harmful Flame Retardants
Cotton treated with boric acid: Cotton is a natural fiber. However, treating cotton with boric acid may cause organ poisoning.
Tricarbonyl chloride (TDCPP): May cause cancer and affect fertility.
Decabromodiphenyl ether: May affect nerves. May cause cancer.
Molded Acrylic Fiber: Contains antimony oxide, a carcinogen.
Melamine Resin: Contains formaldehyde, which is an irritant to the nose, throat and eyes.
Brominated Flame Retardants/Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers/PBDEs: PBDEs include a group of substances used as flame retardants. Some variants of PBDEs were found to be carcinogenic, so PBDEs were phased out in the U.S. in 2005.
Not long ago, mattress fiberglass was a popular alternative to potentially hazardous chemicals that passed flammability tests. However, the addition of fiberglass to memory foam mattresses has raised some consumer concerns, primarily the possibility of exposure to fiberglass particles.
Healthy and safe flame-retardant fibers
Wool
Naturally flame retardant. Not commonly found in polyfoam or memory foam mattresses. Usually found in latex mattresses. Organic mattresses use organic wool as a flame retardant.
Aramid Fibers
Heat-resistant, strong, non-toxic synthetic fibers. Flame-retardant inner covers and flame-retardant fabrics made with aramid fibers can meet and exceed legal and regulatory flame-retardant requirements.
Armor – Jiahe has the best quality Aramid fibre mattress cover FR fabrics and FR socks.
Aramid Flame Retardant Fabrics
Aramid flame retardant fabrics have several distinguishing characteristics that make them the industry’s first choice.

First, it is a permanently flame retardant fabric that provides long-lasting fire protection. Its inherent flame retardancy provides a crucial layer of safety for mattress applications.
In addition, the fabric is lightweight, ensuring that it does not add unnecessary bulk or weight to the mattress. This allows for comfort and convenience for both the manufacturer and the end user.
Aramid flame retardant fabric is environmentally friendly and breathable, meeting all European and American environmental standards. It is 100% glass-free, eliminating concerns about the release of harmful substances. With a commitment to sustainable development, the use of this fabric is in line with responsible manufacturing practices.
A major advantage of aramid flame retardant fabrics is their cost-effectiveness. By choosing this fabric, companies can save approximately 20% of their costs while increasing their competitiveness in the marketplace. The durability and long-lasting flame retardancy of this fabric contributes to cost-effectiveness, as it reduces the need for frequent replacements or additional fire protection measures.
Things to consider when buying a new mattress
All mattresses may contain chemical flame retardants. Polyurethane mattresses and memory foam mattresses are made with chemicals. However, not all chemicals are harmful, and choosing a healthy and safe product requires a little more time to screen and select.
